Of course the Meter had to see “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

We all know that this is not a ‘HP’ movie, but several references are thrown in to tie this series to the other. Most impressively, David Yates, Director of “OoTP”, “HBP”, and “DH1&2” was brought back to add his signature style to this (and no doubt the next four) premier movie in the FB franchise.

This will be a very abbreviated Meter report because so many will want to go watch this, and I’m not going to throw any spoilers out there, but if you want to risk a few insights into the rating, check below the link.

Casting – 9.2. Every actor seemed to be perfect for their role, from Eddie Redmayne portraying Newt, a man who is more comfortable with animals than humans, to Alison Sudol who steals the show as the irrepressible Legilimens, Queenie. The Meter had no qualms with any portrayal in this film.

Direction – 7.4. The Director, IMO, spent too much time on ‘comic relief’ that detracted from the storyline. Sure, that Niffler is cute, but you can only watch so much of the CG character stuffing its gut with coin. The Meter was also disappointed that the Director included an ‘oogie’ relationship in the story line – Graves and Credence. Their relationship was portrayed with too many boundary and grooming violations between an adult and a child. Not necessary, David.

Costumes – 8.6. The Meter loved the clothing. It was all very period perfect, even down to the high-water pants.

Sets – 9.0. Everything that wasn’t computer generated was a perfect complement to the time era. Dreary New York City in the mid 1920’s – you could almost smell the paper and wood from the offices.

So, this is a brief rating and no true review, but something had to be said. Upon reflection, the Meter doesn’t watch ‘The Sorcerer’s Stone’ too much anymore because the film seems to appeal more to a child. I’m pretty certain that’s what is going on here – this film is too silly for my tastes, but I project JKR is capturing a new young audience. As time goes by and the franchise progresses, we’re going to see things take a turn for the dark.

If I were a teacher, I’d give it a B-. 8.1 on the Meter for Fantastic Beasts.

I completely agree. They are perfect.

Overall, it's a child movie, I enjoyed as such.

Agreed. I didn't go into thinking of it as a children's movie, but it was enjoyable.

I hadn't planned on seeing it initially, but the kids really want to see it. Reckon we'll go when the crowds die down a bit.

There was hardly anyone in the theater yesterday, and usually they are full on Thanksgiving afternoon - I was somewhat surprised.

I think I'll enjoy the next films even more. Hopefully they'll have a great deal more lore involved.

I totally agree with everything you've said! I went to it feeling a little cautious, but I very much enjoyed it. If I had to lodge any complaint, it would be that it was really slow in the beginning. Just when I started to think maybe there is no plot and it is actually just going to show me fantastic beasts, things really took off and it was great through to the end.

I wish I enjoyed it more, but I can't find too much fault with the movie, just fault with my expectations. Oh, well.
